Turbidity Measurement

Turbidity is a measure of solution opacity. It is vital to provide water with an acceptable clarity and TSS (Total Suspended Solids). This is controlled in effluent from water treatment works and industrial waste. The degree of clarity (or, alternatively, "turbidity") is referenced to a universal calibration standard called the formazine standard.

The principle of measuring turbidity is to focus a beam of light into a sample cell volume, measuring either the transmitted or 90 degree scatttered light. The normalized amount of scattered light is calibrated in Nepthelometric Turbidity Units (NTU's).
Tests have shown that turbidity does not vary with temperatutre from 5°C to 50°C.
